Since his first appearance in Damien Leone’s The Ninth Circle (2008), which appeared in All Hallows’ Eve (2013), the sadistic slasher Art the Clown has become somewhat of a horror icon. In his first standalone film Terrifier (2016), we witness Art execute a rather gruesome murder spree on Halloween night, tormenting his victims in a manner that could only be described as barbarous. Although low budget, the film became an instant success and horror fans have waited eagerly for the return of the notorious character. This year, Art has made a violent return, this time on the big screen, in Terrifier 2 – the most brutal and gut-churning gore fest to grace our screens in years.

It’s no surprise that headlines have been circulating since the film’s release, with rumours of passing out and vomiting during screenings; the sequel has surpassed its predecessor in terms of acting, cinematography and, most importantly, graphic effects. Director Damien Leone leaves nothing to the imagination, we witness in full glory Art’s latest Halloween antics in Miles County as he viciously defeats his victims one by one. With a two-hour duration, the film is as disgusting as has been advertised. Memorable murder scenes that are not only brutal in terms of gore, but the brutality of Art’s tormenting with long-winded kills can be a difficult watch. If splatter horror is a subgenre you enjoy, then Terrifier 2 is a must watch. Director Damien Leone has scrapped all rules of horror and crossed the line between acceptable and gut-churning extreme content with style.

A traditional slasher plot, featuring teens, sex, drugs and, naturally, a final girl, Terrifier 2 is cheesy in terms of screenplay. However, what it lacks in plot, it makes up for in extreme, graphic content. Set one year after his murder spree on Halloween night 2016, the ‘Miles County Clown’ has become somewhat of an urban legend. Local teen Sienna (Lauren LaVera) is particularly unnerved by the sadistic maniac, experiencing vivid nightmares and becomes convinced that he has made a terrifying return. She is undoubtedly proven right after she becomes Art’s latest target, which inevitably means it's open season on her friends and family. From the opening scene to the final showdown the gore is consistent, excessive and torturous.

A gruesome and brutal thrill ride, Terrifier 2 has re-invented the slasher subgenre, with splatter elements to evoke a gruesome belly-churning experience, pushing the limits of the slasher subgenre in an effective style.

Terrifier 2 is now available to rent or purchase on Amazon Prime.
