The Best Shudder Original Films

Updated: Nov 11, 2022

Shudder is a treat for horror fans based in the UK, the only horror streaming site available in the nation. From classics like 'Night of the Living Dead' (1968), to hidden gems like Karyn Kusama's unnerving psychological horror/thriller 'The Invitation' (2015); Shudder has a little something for every horror fan. Among its large genre-specific collection, Shudder also has a large selection of original films - monsters, slashers, paranormal; you name it, Shudder has most likely done it.

In this list, we have named some of the best Shudder original films available to stream today -- we'll continue to update the list as more originals are released.

DEADSTREAM (2022)

You don’t have to be a fan of found-footage horror to appreciate Deadstream; a comical thrill ride that ignites fear among the chaos. In an attempt to win back his sponsorship and followers, discredited internet personality Shawn Ruddy (Joseph Winter) livestreams himself at an abandoned haunted house. After he accidently releases the vengeful spirit of the previous owner, Shawn’s followers watch eagerly as his redemption turns deadly. Directed by Joseph (who also stars alongside Melanie Stone) and Vanessa Winter, Deadstream serves as a comical spoof of social media influencing, while inciting fear upon its audience with a creepy backdrop, believable acting and an intense situation. Joseph’s character makes poor decisions; however, it fits nicely into the plot and makes him undeniably likeable.

TERRIFIED (2017)

With English subtitles, Terrified is an entirely ghostly Argentinian horror. After a series of paranormal events take place in different houses within the same Bueno Aires neighbourhood, paranormal investigators attempt to uncover the truth behind the mysterious happenings. If you are a fan of paranormal horrors, then Terrified is for you. With multiple entities across multiple locations, the film works almost like an anthology; and the chances are if one house didn’t scare you, another will.

THE BOY BEHIND THE DOOR (2020)

A terrifying premise; two twelve-year-old boys are abducted on their way home from school, and a fight for survival ensues. This directorial debut by Justin Powell and David Charbonier is brilliantly executed – a precise, clever and well-acted masterpiece. After two friends Bobby (Lonnie Chavis) and Kevin (Ezra Dewey) are abducted on their way home from school, an escaped Bobby breaks into their abductor’s house in an attempt to save his best friend. As we follow Bobby through the house, the film ignites extreme tension with close-calls, distanced cries and dark atmospheric lighting. The Boy Behind the Door has enough uncomfortable moments to keep you gripped from the opening sequence.

SATAN’S SLAVES (2017)

Some films stick with you days, weeks, months, and sometimes years after watching them. Satan’s Slaves most definitely has that effect. From director Joko Anwar, this Indonesian paranormal horror diminishes over-used jump scares and instead focusses on a build of tension and realistic imagery. Taking place in 1981, former singer Manwarni is bedridden from an unknown illness. After Manwarni passes away, spirits are seen within the family home, terrifying her children, husband, and mother. Available with subtitles, and now and English dubbed version, Satan’s Slaves brings something new to the paranormal subgenre. Although the plot isn’t fresh, the way in which the film is executed makes it feel entirely original.

IMPETIGORE (2019)

From Joko Anwar, director of Satan’s Slaves (2017), this Indonesian folk horror is an intense watch. After Maya (Tara Basro) moves into an inherited house in her ancestorial village, she unwittingly becomes a target for members of the community riddled by a curse that has plagued them for years. A disturbing and tension-packed plot, Impetigore is the very definition of folk horror; an uncomfortably effective film that’s execution is clever, well-acted and disturbing.
